Creativity Meets Purpose

Photography has been much more than a profession for me, it has been a lifelong journey of creativity, learning, leadership, and service.

I entered the professional photography industry in 1998 as an apprentice in a high-end portrait studio. That experience ignited a passion that soon evolved into a successful photography business specializing in portrait, event, and organizational photography. Working alongside my two daughters, I was able to combine my business background, technical expertise, and love of working with people to build a career that has been both personally and professionally rewarding.

As our business grew, I became actively involved in professional photography associations because I recognized the importance of continuing education, networking, and giving back to the profession that had given me so much. That commitment led me to the Virginia Professional Photographers Association (VPPA), where I found opportunities not only to grow as a photographer but also to serve fellow professionals.

Over the years, I served VPPA in a variety of leadership positions, including approximately ten years as Executive Secretary. Those years gave me the opportunity to help strengthen the organization, support its members, and preserve its history while developing lasting friendships throughout Virginia's photography community. I later had the privilege of serving as President and Chair of VPPA, helping guide the association through periods of growth and change while encouraging photographers to pursue professional development, certification, and lifelong learning.

My commitment to professional service also extended to the national level through Professional Photographers of America (PPA). For over six years, I served as a PPA Councilor, representing Virginia photographers and participating in the governance and future direction of the association. Serving as a bridge between our state and national organizations allowed me to advocate for working photographers while strengthening relationships throughout the profession.

Throughout my career, I have believed that professional growth is built on education, continuous learning, and a willingness to share knowledge with others. I earned the designation of PPA Certified Professional Photographer, demonstrating my commitment to technical excellence and professional standards.

In January 2022, I was awarded the Photographic Craftsman degree from Professional Photographers of America, recognizing my contributions to photographic education, mentoring, speaking, and service to the profession. In 2024, I earned the Master of Photography degree, reflecting years of dedication to improving my photographic skills through continuing education, image competition, and artistic excellence.

The Virginia Professional Photographers Association has also honored my commitment to the profession by awarding me the Fellow of Photography degree and the Service to Photography degree. These distinctions recognize years of professional achievement, leadership, education, and volunteer service to Virginia photographers. They are especially meaningful because they reflect not only my accomplishments as a photographer but also my commitment to strengthening the profession and helping others succeed.

I have also been humbled to receive the VPPA Distinguished Leadership Award, the Virginia Award for Service, and a National Award recognizing my contributions to professional photography. While I deeply appreciate these honors, I consider my greatest achievement to be the opportunity to mentor others, encourage lifelong learning, and leave the profession stronger than I found it.

Whether I am behind the camera capturing a family's memories, documenting an important event, mentoring fellow photographers, or serving in leadership roles, I have always believed that photography is about much more than creating images. It is about preserving stories, building relationships, serving others, and leaving a lasting legacy.

Today, photography remains one of the cornerstones of my life. It continues to complement my interests in technology, leadership, and volunteer service, allowing me to combine creativity with purpose. Looking back over the years, I realize my journey has never been solely about taking photographs, it has been about using my talents, experiences, and leadership to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and in the profession I love.
