Photography has been more than a profession for Deborah Fiskāit has been a lifelong journey of learning, leadership, service, and creativity.
Deborah entered the professional photography industry in 1998, as an apprentice in a high end portrait studio. This experience would soon launch what would become a successful career specializing in portrait, event, and organizational photography working with her two daughters. Combining her business background, technical expertise, and passion for people, she quickly established herself as a respected professional photographer in Virginia.
As their business grew, Deborah became actively involved in professional photography associations, recognizing the value of continuing education, networking, and giving back to the profession. Her commitment to excellence led her to the Virginia Professional Photographers Association (VPPA), where she dedicated countless hours to advancing the organization and supporting fellow photographers.
Over the years, Deborah served VPPA in numerous leadership roles, including approximately ten years as Executive Secretary. Her organizational skills, institutional knowledge, and commitment to member service made her an invaluable resource to the association. She later served as President and Chair of VPPA, helping guide the organization through periods of growth and change while encouraging photographers to pursue professional development and certification.
At the national level, Deborah became actively involved with Professional Photographers of America (PPA). She served for approximately six years as a PPA Councilor, representing Virginia photographers and providing a voice in the governance and future direction of the association. Through this role, she helped strengthen the connection between state and national photography organizations while advocating for the needs of working photographers.
Deborah's dedication to photographic excellence and professional service earned her recognition throughout the industry. She achieved the distinction of becoming a PPA Certified Professional Photographer, demonstrating her commitment to technical proficiency and professional standards. In January 2022, she was awarded the prestigious Photographic Craftsman degree from PPA, recognizing her extensive contributions to photographic education and service to the profession.
In 2024, Deborah achieved one of PPA's highest honors when she earned the Master of Photography degree. This distinguished degree recognizes photographers who have demonstrated exceptional photographic skill, artistic achievement, and a sustained commitment to excellence in professional photography. The accomplishment represents years of dedication to refining her craft and consistently producing work that meets the highest standards of the profession.
Her leadership and volunteer efforts have been recognized with numerous honors, including the VPPA Distinguished Leadership Award, the Virginia Award for Service, and a National Award for outstanding contributions to professional photography.
Throughout her photographic career, Deborah has remained committed to mentoring others, sharing knowledge, and strengthening the photographic community. Whether behind the camera capturing important moments, teaching fellow photographers, or serving in leadership roles, she has consistently demonstrated the values of professionalism, service, and lifelong learning.
Today, Deborah continues to combine her passion for photography with her dedication to volunteer leadership and organizational service. Her journey through VPPA and PPA reflects a career built not only on photographic achievement but also on a commitment to helping others succeed and ensuring a strong future for the profession she loves.
